Academically, I am proud of a few signature moments in my life.
First, my graduation from high school, which for obvious reasons, was a very meaningful personal victory. I not only managed to stay in school in a new country, I graduated from high school.
After I graduated from high school, I went on to a two year college to pursue an associate's degree, which I completed in four years becuase I had to work and go to school at the same time.
The rest is history, I completed a graduate and two post graduate degrees, which I completed more for the love of learning than anything else. By the way, a little tip, if you lead people and some of those people that you lead are learners, NEVER tell them that they are trying to learn too much. That is the best way to get them disengaged or lose their respect for you. Know your people.
In the course of these years, I learned that discipline, focus, hard work and commitment to self improvement, can help you accomplish practically anything you want in life, you may encounter challenges but you will always hold the pen to write your own story.
One of my early professional achievements was with Marriott International Hotels. Right after high school, and while working on my two year degree at Austin Community College, I started working for Marriott as a pool attendant and after a few years, I earned several promotions to eventually become an assistant general manager and night auditor. In 1999, I earned a Bill Tiefel award, which is Marriott's highest Corporate Recognition Program for service excellence.
The other half of my working career has been in the banking industry. Within six years of being hired as a Teller, I earned a promotion to branch management and one of my most significant achievements as a branch manager was growing my branch from a level 3 to a level 5, this meant, I grew business deposits, loans, and customer growth.
My second significant achievement has been my promotion to district manager in Nebraska. I took a leap of faith and left Texas to take over a district with challenges in customer experience, turnover, and several other challenges. Within 4 years, I led my team to turn the district performance around and achieved consistent balanced performance in risk management, customer and team member experience, business, loans, and primary growth. Leading my team through a global pandemic was also another challenge that I led through with enourmous care and sensitivity to take care of employees and customers in times of great uncertainty.
